Reps move to bar acting president, governor from second term

The House of Representatives yesterday moved to bar any person who has acted as president or governor for a period of two years from seeking election to serve beyond one term of four years in office.
The bill, sponsored by the Deputy Speaker Sulaimon Lasun Yussuff specifically noted: “No person who has held office of president or governor of a state or acting as president or governor of a state for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected president or governor, shall be elected to the office of president or governor of a state more than once.”
Lasun, who is also the chairman of the ad hoc committee on constitution review, explained that the aim of the bill is to give constitutional protection to the two-term tradition. He added that by virtue of the provisions of sections 137(1)(b) and 182(1)(b) of the constitution, the president and governor of a state shall serve in those capacities for a maximum period of eight years.
He further argued that the constitution equally envisaged circumstances where a person can be chosen to act as president or governor, including when the president or a governor resigns, dies or is impeached.
This amendment, he said, was inspired by the 22nd amendment to the constitution of the United States which provides: “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice and no person who has

I may probe Mimiko if there are established cases of corruption – Akeredolu

The Governor-Elect of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has said despite his pronouncement of not wanting to probe the administration of the outgoing Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, he would not close his eyes if he stumbles upon established cases of wrongdoing.
Akeredolu, however, re-emphasised that he would not deliberately go out to probe Mimiko’s administration.
Speaking with State House correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, Akeredolu said: “At the centre, the government of President Buhari said we must look back in order to move forward.
“He has been there for over a year now.
“Has he instituted a probe?
“Looking back is not a probe and I maintain that I will not probe any administration.
“This is responsible leadership and I am elected to lead the people.

I may dump PDP in 2018 – Fayose

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has given indication of a plan to dump his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, in 2018.
Fayose said he may seek another political platform to fight the battle of who will succeed him as governor.
He said this on Wednesday during a meeting with the members of the Suppliers’ Association of Nigeria, Ikere Ekiti chapter.
He said: “I don’t know the platform I will use for the 2018 election yet and at the appropriate time, I will tell you.
“We are still studying the situation.
“We have to play the game left, right and centre and whoever we are going to use and the platform, you will all be part of the process because party politics is about the people.
“You all saw how people sold their votes in Ondo State.
“I am confident that that will not happen in Ekiti.
“I am close to the people.

You have no sense of shame – Kaduna APC tells Shehu Sani

The Kaduna state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central district, as a man without “sense of shame”.
Salisu Wusono, acting publicity secretary of the party in Kaduna, said this in response to Sani’s earlier statement on his suspension.
Sani had alleged that Nasir el-Rufai, governor of the state, had hijacked the party, and was using it to fight him.
But denying the allegation Wusono accused Sani of representing the politics of “fraud and deceit”.
“As if determined to prove that he is beyond redemption, Shehu Sani penned a pathetic response to his continued suspension from our party that testifies that he is a denizen of the gutter,” he said.
“Anyone that harboured any doubt about the morass in his mind and the decadence of his conduct would now have those uncertainties wiped away. Crassness of language is a twin to crass of conduct.
“His outburst is a confirmation, that he has no sense of shame. He is a man full of tantrums, a busker who simultaneously entertains and distresses people with his shameless antics.
“He has since lost focus and why he was elected to the senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the

Ondo guber: PDP rejects Soremekun as Chief Returning Officer

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Ondo state, said it has reliable information that plans are being made to manipulate and rig Saturday’s governorship election.
PDP alleged that to attain the nefarious agenda, INEC has concluded plans to use the same set of people who compromised the Edo election.
Ayo Fadaka, PDP publicity director, in a statement said Professor Kayode Soremekun, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, who served as Chief Returning Officer in Edo State has been recruited to serve as CRO in Ondo State to “use the same template that compromised that election in Ondo State.”
“We hereby warn INEC not to bring Soremekun and his unscrupulous gang to Ondo State. We emphasis that he is not the only Vice Chancellor in Nigeria and as such does not exclusively possess the skill to discharge that responsibility,” the party warned.

The governorship candidate of the NCP in the election, Obayoriju Jimoh Abass, who disclosed this in Akure yesterday, said the support for Akeredolu became necessary because of the pedigree of the APC candidate.

He added that aside the experience and background of the APC candidate, Akeredolu is contesting the

Training of workers not political – Mimiko

The Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has denied the reports that the current training of workers is politically motivated.
According to Mimiko, the training organised by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) is to sensitise workers to survive during hard times.
The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Kola Ademujimi, said the criticism by the opposition parties was to discredit the patriotic efforts of the trade unions.
He said it was ridiculous that the opposition would criticise the training, adding that the workers had the choice of deciding whom to vote for at the governorship election.
The one-day seminar held in Akure, was titled: “The Survival of Workers in the Face of Economic Recession in Nigeria.”

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Nearly one in three migrant children tracked by a refugee charity have gone missing since the "Jungle" camp in the northern French town of Calais was dismantled in October, the organization said on Wednesday.
Refugee Youth Service said it could not locate a third of the 179 child migrants it had been tracking since authorities bulldozed the Jungle, home to up to 10,000 people fleeing war or poverty in the Middle East and Africa.
The fate of children staying in the squalid camp where migrants converged in the hope of making it across to Britain, has been a political problem for the British government.
Religious leaders, refugee rights campaign groups and opposition parties have accused Britain of dragging its heels in helping to deal with unaccompanied children.
Refugee Youth Service, which has worked in the Calais camp since November last year, said a lack of

Kuwaitis vote on Saturday for a new parliament they hope will halt austerity measures forced by falling oil revenues in the emirate, known for its cradle-to-grave welfare system.

With the return of opposition groups after a four-year boycott, the outcome of the snap elections is seen as crucial for shaping the domestic politics of the oil-rich Gulf state.
The seventh polls in a decade follow one of the most intense election campaigns seen in Kuwait, with opposition and pro-government candidates trading barbs over corruption and other allegations.
The opposition is being tipped to make a strong showing, with many members of the previous parliament expected to lose their seats, but is likely to fall well short of a majority.
"The return of opposition groups is the most significant development in this election," said analyst Ayed al-Manna.
"The opposition comeback could lead to a national reconciliation after years of bitter disputes," the political scientist told AFP.
Kuwait's parliament is considered the most powerful in the Gulf Arab states thanks to its legislative and

South Africa's Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa saw his chances of becoming the country's next leader increase on Thursday when a powerful union group backed him to succeed President Jacob Zuma as head of the ruling party.
Zuma is expected to stand down as African National Congress (ANC) president at a party conference in December next year, ahead of national elections in 2019 when his tenure as the country's president will end.
The debate over who should follow Zuma has heated up since the ANC suffered its worst local election results in August, exposing party divisions.
The ANC's dominance of South Africa since apartheid ended in 1994 means it is widely expected to win the 2019 election, making its next leader almost certain to become president.
No one has declared an ambition to run but informal positioning is well under way, with the ANC split between backers of Ramaphosa, a former anti-apartheid leader popular with investors, and those who

Ondo guber: I remain PDP candidate – Ibrahim

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Jimoh Ibrahim yesterday faulted the Court of Appeal verdict which nullified his candidacy as not having a ‘consequential order.”
Ibrahim described the Appeal Court judgment as “one day ruling”, adding that the Supreme Court would sit on the case today (Thursday)
“I have read the decision of the Court of Appeal delivered today (yesterday) without a consequential order. The ruling failed to specifically say that my name should be substituted by INEC.
“Since there is no consequential order directing INEC to do so, the judgement is therefore not binding on me and INEC cannot remove my name and as such I remain PDP candidate for Saturday’s election.
“But we are optimistic that we have nothing to lose as the Supreme Court sits on same case tomorrow. We

Nigeria structured for wealth sharing, guzzling – Ekweremadu

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has blamed Nigeria’s economic woes on wrong federal structure, which he said had predisposed the country to wealth sharing, indolence, and poor governance since the fall of the First Republic.
He reiterated that restructuring remained the true and lasting solution to the nation’s many woes, as it would promote wealth creation, productivity, good governance, and national development.
He made the assertions at the investiture of Dr. Omede Idris as the 15th President of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, APBN, in Abuja, Thursday night.
Ekweremadu, who said the investiture ceremony came at a most crucial time in the country’s recent history, regretted that the Nigerian economy easily lapsed into recession, while the nation continued to lament over fall in oil price in a knowledge-driven global economy.
He, therefore, expressed worries that calls and attempts to re-engineer the nation’s federalism through restructuring and injection of fiscal federalism had always been unheeded and unsuccessful.

In the motion filed by the Sheriff faction of the party in Ondo State through its counsel Rapheal Oluyede, the three-member panel of the Appeal Court was joined as 5th to 7th respondents. Trump will get wake-up call when he takes office – Obama

In a news conference at the White House, Obama said the freewheeling Trump could not be as outspoken as he was during the long and bitter campaign that ended last week with the Republican’s surprise win over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Subdued and carefully choosing his words, Obama gave what appeared to be dispassionate advice to his successor free of much of the partisan rancour that marked the election campaign.
“This office has a way of waking you up,” Obama said. “Those aspects of his positions or predispositions that don’t match up with reality, he will find shaken up pretty quick because reality has a way of asserting itself.”

“Most Nigerians in the Northeast states like New York, New Jersey, California, among others, support Clinton and I see Clinton winning.
“I think she is qualified for the job, being an experienced wife of a former governor and wife of the president when her husband was president and she was actually involved.
“She was a senator and secretary of state. So, she has learnt the ropes and you can’t compare her against someone who is not experienced,” he said.

At the resumed hearing yesterday, counsel to the embattled governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) had announced appearance and noted that the business before the court was to move a motion filed by his client seeking to appeal the judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja that removed his name as the candidate of the party.

The senators, Sani Yerima (Zamfara), Sam Anyanwu (Imo), Binta Mary Garba (Adamawa), and Adeola Olamilekan (Lagos) gave their support during a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday.
The Senate had on October 5 voted against a bill seeking a special status, whereby one per cent of federally generated revenue is paid as a special grant to Lagos State in view of the former Nigerian capital’s socio-economic significance.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Remi Tinubu representing Lagos Central, was rejected after failing a voice vote called by Ike Ekweremadu. Yerima, Anyanwu, Garba and Adeola maintained that approving a special fund for Lagos was important because the state is a mini-Nigeria.
To them, any efforts at making Lagos a better place are aimed at the total wellness of Nigeria. So, they agreed with Ambode that the bill should be revisited.
According to Yerima, Lagos is not just cosmopolitan; it is a small Nigeria, as every state and community in the country has representatives in it.
